Aperçu

Watch skilled stonemasons from the Guild of St Stephen and St George at work and then, with their guidance, try carving for yourself if you wish. A family trail and craft activity for children (age range 5 to 12 years approx.) is also on offer.

This will be a great opportunity to learn more about the craft of stone carving and how Bath Abbey is full of remarkable examples, much of which is around 500 years old. The Guild of St Stephen and St George trains young people in this skill through apprenticeships which take 5-7 years to complete.

The family trail and craft activity will encourage children to explore some beautiful designs and then create their own collage Tudor rose. The Abbey's Learning Officer plus volunteers will be on hand to answer questions and ensure that all activity is Covid-secure.

Bath Abbey is the last major church of the Gothic period in England and has some fine examples of stone carving. The construction of the famously stunning fan-vaulting was begun in about 1500 by Robert and Wiliam Vertue, who also worked at Westminster Abbey and Windsor Castle. The Chantry Chapel has delicately carved medieval imagery showing birds, leaves, Tudor roses and even a dragon. So, there’s lots to discover at our Heritage Open Day event!

Stone carving is popular so you may need to wait for a few minutes.

A Covid-secure event:
- Masks will be worn by all staff & volunteers involved & visitors are politely requested to do the same
- Gloves & protective goggles will be given to anyone handling tools
- Goggles will be disinfected before next use
- Craft activity will be in individualised packs to avoid sharing equipment
- Surfaces will be regularly disinfected
- Stone carving stations will be 2m apart
