Somewhere in the mountains, in a remote area, the only citizen was an old man who was a captain. It was unusual for the captain to live in the mountains, but he chose the northern wind over the glossy and wild waves. Actually, it was not about the wind, but a treasure that he had to keep safe. This treasure wasn't just a silverish thing that will lure crows, it was a lake, the Captain's Lake. Even though the captain never wanted it to be an obligation, it naturally belonged to him. He took care of it over the years, he appreciated every droplet of its crystal clear water, but one day the mountain named Vojnik (Soldier) informed him that the modern society will make this lake a tourist attraction. When Modern society came, they asked the captain many questions that only included numbers. ,,How deep is the lake? How many kilometers is its territory?" -asked one formally dressed man. ,,I don't know anything about numeric facts"- answered the Captain. ,,What do you know then?" -angrily asked the mass of modernity. ,,Every drop of its water is like a note to me, those notes made an octave, they bloomed loudly and brought happiness to every flower around it. Their fragrance was so fresh like first forest strawberries. When you came, their song slowly began to turn into deadly silence. I don't hear their harmony anymore. I just hear noises and I feel that those strawberries will rot in the storm of your acts"- said the captain sadly. They didn't understand him and the pain of human actions began. The captain unfortunately couldn't save the lake... Now, in the present, this lake is just that, the tourist attraction. It doesn’t have protection from the captain. And then, we proudly say that it’s the one of the most beautiful natural beauties in Montenegro. Still, we forget something, we can’t measure its value through beauty, but its health. Have our actions affected it? Nobody wants to answer, because we don’t care about its health, but its worth for tourist season. There is a beautiful name for lakes that are not that reachable like Captain’s lake. We can describe them as wild lakes of mountain spirit. We call them “Gorske oči” (The eyes of the mountain). It’s nice when you know the meaning of that word, but our actions made a blizzard that blinds lakes’ sights every day. It actually blinded us first. We don’t see, or don’t want to notice, our mistakes. There are a lot of questions, but no one dares to answer them. To begin with, we, as human beings, don’t seem to understand the real treasures aren’t money and power, but nature. The country’s heritage is our heritage, too, because if there weren’t citizens, you couldn’t call it a country. That’s the first fact that we need to realize, we must take action even with small impact and we will be noticed, with just a little bit of hope. Montenegrins tend to compare our nature with European countries like Austria, France, Italy, or Switzerland. But every kind of nature is unique and our sea and southern cities may look like Italian cities, our mountains may resemble Austrian and French Alps, and our lakes may be the picture of Switzerland’s lakes. But, do we really know the difference between their and our nature? It’s about care and respect that we give to the nature. We may have all the World’s Wonders, but if we do not protect them and allow them to grow, we can’t mention them so proudly. We must start realizing that we are the ones who make mistakes and also correct them. The Captain’s lake is just a one stalk of wheat in the whole golden field of wheat that needs to grow brighter. There are other stalks that need salvation from linear process of destruction. We need to figure out a way to build, not a perfect, but comfortable and healthy environment that will make us proud. Montenegro probably doesn’t have enough sources to start a drastic change with recycling for example. We probably won’t pay people to recycle like Germany soon, but what we can do is to recycle for ourselves. Nature can grow and develop without us, but humans can’t take a single breath without it. We can’t allow ourselves to destroy nature by making it a nice sight for the eyes, but when we take a deeper research, our hearts may get infected with virus of carelessness. We should share our problems and together find solutions. We must know that we legally have rights as children and humans for a healthy environment that will be our biggest treasure that will again sing a hymn of invincibility and durability.
