The Naval

It was one of the most important shipyards in Spain.

Specializing in the construction of large ships, including merchant ships, ferries... The history of La Naval dates back to the beginning of the 20th century, and it made a significant contribution to the Spanish maritime industry and the economic development of the region. The history of the Sestao Naval Station is closely linked to the region's industrial and maritime development, symbolizing the community's identity and progress.

In recent years, La Naval de Sestao faced serious financial difficulties and structural problems in the naval sector worldwide. After several attempts to restructure and look for investors, in 2017.

Naval is a European industry, competing with Asian, South Korean and Chinese shipyards, where costs are lower. The resulting crisis closed this historic shipyard, ending an era for the Basque maritime industry and leaving a socio-economic impact on the region.

The commonwealth and local authorities have looked for ways to adapt the space and facilities of the shipyard, with the aim of revitalizing the area and creating new employment opportunities, but the loss of La Naval remains a blow to Sestao and Bizkaia.
