Day of community spirit and cultural celebration as we come together to weave a traditional willow fence in the heart of our Town and County. Willow weaving is more than a practical craft; it is a tangible link to our past. In Ireland, the use of willow for fencing, basketry, and other utilitarian items dates back centuries.

By engaging in this communal activity, we honour the resourcefulness of our ancestors and preserve their knowledge for future generations. This event serves as a living history lesson, reminding us of our roots and the sustainable practices that were integral to rural Irish life.

By participating in the weaving of a willow fence, our community not only creates something beautiful and functional but also reaffirms our connection to the land and to each other. It is a celebration of heritage that underscores the importance of preserving traditional skills in our modern world.

Willow Harvesting Workshop Time 10am - 11am. A guided walk through the Park, learning how to select & harvest willow branches sustainably.

Willow Fence Weaving Demonstration & Adult Willow Workshop Time 11am - 12:30pm. Resident artist will demonstrate traditional techniques, sharing knowledge passed down through generations.

Lunch 12:30pm - 1:30pm

Children’s Willow Workshops Time 1.30pm - 3pm Special area where children can make small willow crafts, fostering an early appreciation for this traditional skill with Philip McSweeney of River Dog Studios.

Heritage Walk Time 3pm - 4pm. Our Ecologist will discuss the significance of willow in Irish culture, its role in the daily lives of our ancestors.
Kerry County Council & The Irish Heritage Council are sponsoring this event is open to everyone. Please book online or call us. We encourage participants to wear comfortable clothing. It is important to bring gardening gloves if you wish to participate in the weaving. All other materials will be provided.
