BALLINAKILL ABBEY - Connections, Routes and Networks.
The community in Glinsk in the North-eastern corner of Co. Galway are proud of the rich Heritage that lies in their midst. Glinsk Castle is a National Monument providing an iconic focus at the entrance to the village, while Ballinakill Abbey is situated nearby.
Ballinakill Abbey is the focus of our Heritage Week event. 2024 will see the culmination a 3-year Conservation project which will protect and conserve this important Heritage site for future generations.
For Heritage Week 2024 we want to explore the Connections, Routes and Networks that spring forth from this hallowed building. If those walls could talk, each stone would have a story to tell....
It could tell of early Christian times.....
It could show us where the first Christians in this area were baptised...
We could hear the words of the Dominicans that once served here.
We could learn of the changes when the Normans came...
We can see again the First Burke(DeBurgh) to set foot on Irish soil...
We can see the wonderful craftsmanship of the Great Flamboyant window.
The deft strokes of the sculptor that shaped the Crucifixion plaques.
Connections leading us back in time....to Penal days and Cromwellian times.
Networks linking Ballinakill Abbey with Rome and New York.
