Aperçu

This pop-up talk is presented by Community Historian Brendan Matthews who will recount the devastating effects of the mid 14th century Black Death across Europe and the subsequent plagues that were prevalent within the later medieval town of Drogheda.

A reminder of this traumatic period in our history can be seen in the form of the ‘gruesome’ yet magnificently carved cadaver effigies, situated on the rear wall of St Peter’s Church of Ireland graveyard.

This Heritage Week event is staged by the Séan Corcoran Series whose 2024 artist-in-residence Natalia Beylis is working with the full circle bell ringers of St Peter’s Church of Ireland and St Peter's Roman Catholic Church to compose a graphic score.

This new composition will be played on the bells within the historic walled town of Drogheda on the Winter Solstice this December.

A new Arts and Heritage Day as part of the Seán Corcoran Series Traditional and Multidisciplinary Arts Festival, will take place on Sunday September 8 in venues across St Laurence St, Drogheda.
