Belonging to the French border defense system of the Maginot Line, La Ferté's work was, in May 1940, the scene of one of the most dramatic events of the Battle of France. After several days of fighting, he saw the entirety of his garrison - about a hundred men - perish asphyxiated at the bottom of his underground gallery.
