Aperçu

The fifteen paintings in five panels tell the story of the life and legend of Saint Martin de Tours. Martin, born in Hungary, was a disciple of Hilaire de Poitiers. He became bishop of Tours in 373 A.D., and evangelized Touraine, Saintonge, and Auvergne. He died in 397\\. The tapestries were restored in 2017\\. Each painting is decorated with an explanatory quatrain in old French. The first scene is the sharing of the coat. A young soldier of the Roman army arriving in Gaul, Martin gave half of his coat to a poor man (he had only half of it, the other belonging to the army). Discover the Collegiate Church of Saint Martin built in the 14th century in a Gothic style by the Cardinal des Prés and its Flemish tapestries classified as a Historic Monument!
