Built between 1235 and 1365, the collegiate church of Saint-Martin is a major work of Gothic architecture in Alsace. The south tower was the victim of a fire which destroyed in 1572 its frame and its crowning. Three years later, it was replaced by the original bulbous lantern that gives the building its distinctive silhouette. The church has undergone several restoration campaigns, the last of which, completed in 1982, allowed to find the foundations of a church of the year 1000, as well as traces of successive enlargements in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. The Colmariens have long regarded the Collegiate Church of St Martin as their cathedral, a direct translation of the German "Münster".
