Discovery of the Estagnol National Nature Reserve
Shared between water and land, the landscapes of the Estagnol reserve tell the story that marked this exceptional site. From farming to conservation, the Estanhol (a small pond in Occitan) has a strong relationship with the people of the territory. From the 12th century, several activities followed: sagnes, salins, mining. Only on 19 November 1975, at the initiative of local hunters and naturalists, the Estagnol was declared a National Nature Reserve. The French Biodiversity Office (OFB) is the owner and historical manager. In 2019, a co-management with the Conservatory of Natural Spaces of Occitanie is set up. They ensure the maintenance and preservation of the biodiversity present on the site.
