Founded by monks of the Cistercian order in the heart of the forests of Provence, the abbey of Thoronet was built between 1160 and 1190 and completed in 1250\\. It is an architectural ensemble from the Romanesque period with the characteristics of Cistercian architecture: purity of lines, simplicity of volumes and harmonious proportions. Along with the abbeys of Silvacane and Sénanque, the abbey of Thoronet is one of the three Cistercian abbeys of Provence. In the 13th century, the abbey was home to about 30 monks. However, less than two centuries later, its decline began. Abolished during the French Revolution, the abbey was sold as a national property to private owners who used it as a farm. In the 19th century, the abbey benefited from the enthusiasm of scholars, notably Prosper Mérimée who inscribed it on the first list of historical monuments in 1840\\.
