The headquarters of the Société des Gens de Lettres since 1929, the Hôtel de Massa was moved in 1927-1928 from the Champs-Élysées to the Observatoire gardens, where it still stands today. But he already had a long history. Built in 1778-1784 by Jean-Baptiste le Boursier, renowned architect, for an administrator of the Posts, Thiroux de Montsauge, it shelters illustrious guests, from the Duke of Richelieu Fronsac to the third Duke of Massa, who left him his name. Between the two, its ideal location on the Champs-Élysées designated it as the seat of embassy: Italy (1802-1814), Austria (1814-1826) or Belgium (1842-1848). During receptions, masked balls, banquets, official visits, he saw the crowned heads and the most illustrious names of Europe.
