Behind the scenes of the Archaeological Museum of Istres
The Baumes Castle is an Italian-style mansion, dear to the heart of the Istreans, completely restored to become a place of seminar and work for institutions and companies. The name of this house comes from the caves (balms) previously visible before the urbanization of the neighborhood. Auguste Balthazard Denis Arduin (1854-1920) inherited from his parents a farm property in the Pepi district. On this property was a mansion that the new owner had restored and transformed into an Italian villa. It was at this time that the Istreans called it Château Arduin, especially for its second floor and its loggia with 7 bays that offered breathtaking views of the ponds of Berre and the Olive tree. During World War II, the Germans used it as a hospital. In 2020 and 2021, the Château des Baumes underwent a complete renovation. The Tourist Office is specifically responsible for animating the reception room on the ground floor through conferences, visits, thematic evenings and other events in connect
