The first mention of Craux, between 845 and 866 indicates that in the place of the current castle, was the "villa Craxanciaco", (a territorial subdivision, containing several mansions, which are agricultural and fiscal units). Between the 11th and 12th centuries, a ford tower was used to monitor the area, accompanied by a first building, which served as a hunting lodge for the lords of Ucel, owners of the place. Then at the end of the 13th century, after the demolition of the castle of Ucel, the remaining branch of the Ucel had Craux enlarged and converted into their new castle. They expanded and modified the castle until the seventeenth century, where they built the stables and the common courtyard, to install farmers, guardians of the property when the Ucel moved to Aubenas. In 1750, the last heiress of the Ucels sold the castle and land to the Sauzet de Fabrias (the lords of Ailhons), who kept it as a summer residence until 1945\\.
