St Mary's Cathedral
6 September 2025 (11:00 - 16:00) St Mary’s Cathedral is a prime example of Aberdeen’s architectural heritage, built in 1860 in the Gothic Revival style. Its soaring spire, stained-glass windows, and finely crafted stone and woodwork embody the decorative beauty and craftsmanship of the period, while continuing to serve as a living place of worship and community. The guided tour offers visitors the chance to look through these “windows to the past,” appreciating the history and culture of the Catholic community in the city, while also considering the Cathedral’s role as a “door to the future” - a place that continues to evolve and welcome people of all backgrounds in the present day. For Doors Open Days visitors are invited to join a guided tour of St Mary’s Cathedral, led by knowledgeable volunteers who will share the rich history, architecture, and faith story of this landmark church. The tour will highlight the Cathedral’s striking Gothic design, stained-glass windows, carved stone and woodwork, and its role as the mother church of the Catholic Diocese of Aberdeen. Guests will have the opportunity to explore both the spiritual and cultural significance of the building, with time for questions at the end. All are warmly welcome, whether of faith or none. Tours at 12pm, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. Lasting approximately one hour. Wheelchair access is via the side door at 16 Huntly Street or via the carpark.
