Talk on James Stephens 1825- 1901 - Life and Legacy in Loughboy Library on Tuesday 19th August @ 11 am Local Historian, Larry Scallan, a retired military officer with years of service and expertise will deliver two talks on the life and legacy of James Stephens. Attendees will learn about the life of James Stevens on the 200th anniversary of his birth; and the story of the James Stephens Military Barracks and its strategic importance. James Stephens, who was born in Kilkenny City, was the founder of the Fenians/Irish Republican Brotherhood in 1858. An engineer by profession, he worked on the construction of the Waterford/Limerick railway line. He took part in the 1848 Rebellion and was exiled in France and the United States, before returning to Ireland and marrying in Dublin. During his lifetime, a famous Kilkenny GAA club was founded in Kilkenny and named in his honour.
