13 September 2025 (11:00 - 16:00) You’re warmly invited to the Doors Open Day at Bonnyrigg Mosque – a special event for the community to explore the building, learn more about Islam, enjoy exhibitions and presentation. Try some refreshments, and ask any questions you may have. We are flexible, visitors can spend as little or as much time in the building as they like. Enjoy the hospitality and meet the local Muslim community The mosque is located in a unique listed building - Andrew Carnegie's philanthropy funded the construction of over 2,500 libraries, both in the United States and around the world. He and his foundation spent over $56 million to build these libraries, many of which still stand today. These libraries were a key part of Carnegie's vision for a more educated society, aiming to provide access to knowledge for all. The Carnegie Library in Bonnyrigg, Midlothian is slightly different from most of the others built at the time in that it has a harled exterior rather than the usual stone finish. The sandstone trims around the doors and windows are used sparingly to give a nice contrast to the grey harling. The library was designed by the Edinburgh practice of Greig, Fairbairn and MacNiven who continued with a similar design for the nearby Parish Council offices which opened a year later in 1909. We will discuss what happened in the building after the library up until the Mosque acquired it. We also welcome visitors to share their stories of the building. Entry is via the gated entrance on Douglas Crescent.
