Make your games! The musical life in French casinos

In a casino, we play... but not only money. From their development (in the first half of the 19th century) to the present, French gaming establishments have always focused on music. But why is it so important? In what spaces does it play? What directories do they present to the clientele? And who are the musicians performing there? Bringing together for the first time a series of printed documents, audio and audio-visual from all French casinos, Make your bets! answers these questions recently addressed in a book of the same name coordinated by Martin Guerpin and Etienne Jardin (Make your games! The musical life in French casinos, 19th-20th century, Actes Sud/Palazetto Bru Zane, 2024). This exhibition responds to a triple challenge: compare the musical programs offered by casinos; highlight the impressive diversity of music that was played (from classical music to electro music through jazz) ; and explain the evolution of the "soundtrack" of casinos from 1850 to the present day. So many realities sometimes forgotten, that this exhibition reminds us in images... and music!
