Aperçu

Louis-Joseph Brassart was born in 1784 in Hesdin and died in 1854 in Hesdin. He enlisted in the Grande Armée and became a sergeant of the foot grenadiers of the Imperial Guard. He participated in the campaigns of Saxony in 1813 and France in 1814. Faithful grognard to the Emperor in exile on the island of Elba, he is at his side upon his return to France during the 100 days. Taken prisoner at the Battle of Waterloo, he was named a knight of the Legion of Honor in 1815. Brave soldier, he returned to Hesdin and was the last guardian of the Porte d'Arras. He occupied the house that bears his name today, avenue du Général Leclerc. This house built in the seventeenth century, at the time when Hesdin was still fortified, was located in the middle of ditches on a half-moon. It was a guard post that solicited the payment of the grant before entering the city. Long hidden under the greenery that had invaded the premises since the departure of the last tenants in the 90s, Father Brassart’s house has benefited from a vast restoration project, commissioned by the city under the aegis of Gérard Lozinguez at the time, and ensured by the association Cyprès. The garden of scents at the Maison du Père Brassart was inaugurated in June 2022. It is also a garden with an educational purpose where local species are found. The garden is accessible to the public during the summer. As for the Maison du Père Brassart, it hosts temporary exhibitions and occasional events.
