Piazza dei Martiri in Carpi is one of the largest squares in Italy. The square has origins linked to the Pio family and the Renaissance period.

The large square symbolizes city life and the buildings. It has religious, political and aristocratic power. The name was changed to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele after the unification of Italy. Following the Second World War, and then, in 1944, the massacre of 16 people by the fascists, the square was named in their honor, and a monument was also founded at the foot of the castle, again to commemorate them.

The square has an atypical Renaissance structure, as it is surrounded by porticoes and historic buildings. The square took on its current shape and size at the beginning of the 16th century, when the porticoes and clock tower were built. Furthermore, every week, the city market is organized in the square.

This magnificent structure is also used for high-profile events, for example, It was the eleventh stage of the Giro d'Italia in 2019.
