EL SECRETO DE “LES ARCADES”

¡Hola! Somos Migue y Gràcia, estudiantes del colegio San José Fundación Educativa Madre Micaela HHDC, en Tavernes de la Valldigna, un pueblo de Valencia.

Para nosotros, el patrimonio arquitectónico es todo aquello que nos cuenta nuestro pasado. Son los restos de casas o monumentos que nos conectan con nuestras raíces. Gracias a estas cosas que nos dejaron nuestros antepasados, podemos saber cómo era su vida, sus tradiciones… y las debemos proteger para que la gente del futuro también pueda conocer sus raíces.

Aquí donde vivimos, el agua determina nuestro día a día, porque a veces llueve mucho y otras veces nada. Por eso tenemos restos de muchas construcciones relacionadas con el agua.

Para nosotros la construcción más importante es “Les Arcades” de Simat de la Valldigna, porque llevaba agua limpia desde la zona más alta del valle hasta el monasterio y a los pueblos de la llanura. Era una obra muy grande. Recorría más de 7 kilómetros por un barranco de 300 metros de alto. Hoy en día se conservan cuatro tramos de canales sobre arcos y, aunque ya no transportan agua, nos dejan un legado muy importante para nuestro pueblo. Se construyeron para llevar agua al claustro, jardines, fuentes y huertos del monasterio, ya que en pasado aquí vivían monjes cistercienses que se dedicaban a trabajar, rezar, copiar libros, ayudar a los más pobres y sabemos que fueron los maestros canteros del monasterio quienes diseñaron y tallaron cada piedra.

Cada arco se hizo con precisión matemática: las fuerzas se reparten por toda la arcada para que esté más equilibrada y resista el paso de los años.

Y no es el único, tenemos otros acueductos, no solo en España, sino por toda Europa, como el Acueducto de Segovia (España), el Pont du Gard (Francia), el de Biar o el de Teruel (España). Esto demuestra que llevar el agua de un sitio a otro no es un invento de ahora, sino del pasado y nos recuerda la importancia del agua en el mundo.

THE SECRET OF “LES ARCADES”

Hi! We are Migue and Gràcia, students from the San José Madre Micaela Educational Foundation HHDC school, in Tavernes de la Valldigna, a town in Valencia.

For us, the architectural heritage is everything that tells us our past. They are the remains of houses or monuments that connect us with our roots. Thanks to these things that our ancestors left us, we can know how their life was, their traditions... and we must protect them so that the people of the future can also know their roots.

Here where we live, water determines our day to day, because sometimes it rains a lot and other times nothing. That is why we have remains of many constructions related to water.

For us the most important construction is “Les Arcades” of Simat de la Valldigna, because it carried clean water from the highest zone of the valley to the monastery and to the towns of the plain. It was a very big structure. It covered more than 7 kilometers through a ravine 300 meters high. Today, four sections of channels over arches are preserved and, although they no longer transport water, they leave us a very important legacy for our town. They were built to carry water to the cloister, gardens, fountains, and orchards of the monastery, since in the past Cistercian monks lived here who dedicated themselves to working, praying, copying books, helping the poorest and we know that it was the master stonemasons of the monastery who designed and carved each stone.

Each arch was made with mathematical precision: the forces are distributed throughout the archway so that it is more balanced and resists the passing of the years.

And it is not the only one, we have other aqueducts, not only in Spain, but throughout Europe, like the Aqueduct of Segovia (Spain), the Pont du Gard (France), the one of Biar or the one of Teruel (Spain). This shows that carrying water from one place to another is not an invention of now, but of the past and reminds us of the importance of water in the world.
