"UN TESORO DE EUROPA EN LA VALLDIGNA"

¡Hola! Somos Maria y Victoria. Vivimos en Tavernes de la Valldigna, un pueblo cerca de Valencia, en España, y estudiamos en el colegio San José Fundación Educativa Madre Micaela.

Para nosotras, el patrimonio arquitectónico son los restos que nos dejaron nuestros antepasados y nos explican de dónde venimos y cómo vivían. Por eso tenemos que protegerlo, para que la gente del futuro también lo conozca. El patrimonio y las tradiciones de nuestros pueblos representan la historia y la cultura de Europa.

Nuestro patrimonio local es muy interesante: tenemos restos prehistóricos, una playa, naranjos, fiestas, rutas naturales y, sobre todo, un gran monasterio medieval.

El monasterio de Santa María de la Valldigna estaba rodeado por una muralla, era una auténtica fortaleza. Entramos por el “Portal Nuevo”, con una bóveda de crucería. El centro de la vida era el claustro, un jardín rodeado por un corredor cubierto, que ya no se conserva. Desde allí se llegaba a los sitios más importantes: el Refectorio, una sala grande donde los monjes comían en silencio; la Sala Capitular, donde se reunían para tomar decisiones importantes y tenía una bóveda preciosa, como un cielo estrellado; la Obra Nueva donde estaban las cocinas, la biblioteca y los dormitorios. El Abad, que lo dirigía todo, tenía su propia residencia, muy lujosa, como una casa moderna; la iglesia, al principio era gótica, pero tras un terremoto se construyó una nueva en estilo barroco, con una alta bóveda decorada. Es preciosa.

Este monasterio pertenece a la orden del Císter, fundada en 1098 en Cîteaux (Francia).  Los monjes cistercienses querían una vida sencilla, humilde y austera. Por eso, sus monasterios se construían en lugares apartados y tranquilos, sin lujos ni decoraciones excesivas. 

Este monasterio tuvo mucha influencia en Europa entre los siglos XII y XIII y tenemos otros como el de Fontenay en Francia, Rueda, Poblet y Santes Creus en España, y por supuesto, nuestro Monasterio de Santa María de la Valldigna.

Hi! We are Maria and Victoria. We live in Tavernes de la Valldigna, a town near Valencia, in Spain, and we study at the San José Madre Micaela Educational Foundation school.

For us, the architectural heritage is the remains that our ancestors left us and explains to us where we come from and how they lived. That's why we have to protect it, so that people of the future can also know it. The heritage and the traditions of our towns represent the history and culture of Europe.

Our local heritage is very interesting: we have prehistoric archaeological remains, a beach on the coast, orange groves, festive traditions, natural routes, and, above all, a big medieval monastery.

The Monastery of Santa María de la Valldigna was surrounded by a wall, it was a real fortress. We enter through the "Portal Nuevo", with a ribbed vault. The center of the life was the cloister, a garden surrounded by a covered corridor, which is no longer preserved. From there you reached the most important places: the Refectory, a big room where the monks ate in silence; the Chapter House, where they gathered to make important decisions and it had a beautiful vault, like a starry sky; the “New Work” where the kitchens, the library, and the dormitories were. The Abbot, who directed everything, had his own residence, very luxurious, like a modern house; the church, at first it was Gothic, but after an earthquake, a new one was built in Baroque style, with a high vaulted ceiling. It is beautiful.

This monastery belongs to the Cistercian Order, founded in 1098 in Cîteaux (France). The Cistercian monks wanted a simple, humble, and austere life. That's why their monasteries were built in distant and quiet places, without luxuries or excessive decorations.

This monastery had a lot of influence in Europe between the 12th and 13th centuries and we have others like the one at Fontenay in France, Rueda, Poblet, and Santes Creus in Spain, and of course, our Monastery of Santa María de la Valldigna.
