Ponte Real Ferdinando. A story of iron and resilience
We are two 16-year-old students living in the Garigliano area and, together with our high school class and with the support of our mentors from the National Museums Lazio Regional Directorate, we have created a series of videos dedicated to the cultural heritage of our territory. Our project focuses on the Ponte Real Ferdinando, a place we see every day, yet one that carries an important European story.
In our video, we show how this bridge, the first chain-suspension bridge in continental Europe, embodies three forms of resilience:
• technical, thanks to the ingenious solutions designed by engineer Luigi Giura;
• historical, because it has survived wars, explosions, and reconstructions while continuing to serve its original function;
• cultural, as it remains a symbol of identity, memory, and beauty for the people who live in this area.
The bridge is not just a monument: it is part of our everyday experience and shows us that what is created with vision and creativity can endure through the centuries. For us, as young Europeans, preserving and sharing the story of this heritage means understanding where we come from and imagining where we can go.
