HERITAGE

– What does heritage mean to you?

In our view, heritage is something we receive that forms part of our historical past, and it can be either tangible or intangible heritage. In our opinion, heritage is important because it connects us with the generations who lived before us and helps us understand how the world has changed.

– What do you know about European heritage?

We know that Europe’s heritage is very diverse due to the many countries on the continent. Very important civilizations have lived in Europe, such as the Romans and the Greeks, and that is why we have so many castles, bridges, temples, cathedrals, and historic cities. In addition, Europe also has a very strong intangible heritage, ranging from classical music to literature, art, and popular traditions. Although Europe has different languages and cultures, it shares parts of a common history.

– What European history can you find in the heritage around you?

If we look at all the heritage we have in Burgos, we can also find a great deal of European history. The Gothic architecture of the Cathedral shows how medieval culture spread throughout Europe. There is also the Arco de Santa María, which is a Renaissance work. Finally, the Camino de Santiago, which passes through Burgos, was a route along which thousands of Europeans traveled for centuries, mixing cultures, languages, and traditions. Thanks to all this, the heritage around us clearly reflects the history and evolution of Europe.

– What is the most interesting aspect of your local heritage?

The most interesting part of Burgos’s heritage is the Burgos Cathedral, which is undoubtedly the most impressive element, as it is an incredible example of Gothic art and is also a World Heritage Site. It is not only beautiful on the outside, but it also tells stories. Another important heritage site is the Monastery of Las Huelgas, which allows us to learn how queens and nuns lived in the Middle Ages. We also find the Camino de Santiago very interesting, because it has turned Burgos into a meeting place for people from all over Europe for centuries. Finally, although it is sometimes not valued as much, we believe that the intangible heritage of Burgos, such as its festivals, traditions, and gastronomy, is also an essential part of what makes this province special.
