Bridges
“Living through difficult and complicated times, he left behind a great and invaluable legacy.” Such was Mikael Aramyants: persistent and patriotic, intelligent and farsighted. He is an unappreciated titan whom few people know about; therefore, we decided to present Mikael Aramyants and his castle as a symbol of great value and a historical figure. Our goal is to rediscover him in a new light and present him as a bridge between the past and the future, putting his life and legacy to work for the creation of the future.
Following this concept, our group name and video title were born. The name “Kamaron” is a fusion of the following words: Kamk (Will), Kamar (Arch), Vogi (Spirit), and Nerdashnakutyun (Harmony). By revealing Aramyants’ character through engaging activities, we aimed to introduce him to everyone regardless of age and discuss his role in shaping our history.
We conducted a media campaign by visiting schools and preparing booklets containing fascinating information, including a mystery surrounding the castle. Next to the castle, there is a stone circle associated with this mystery. It is quite interesting: when you stand in the center of that stone circle and speak, you can hear your voice echo, yet people standing outside the circle do not hear that echo. It is a mysterious phenomenon that remains scientifically unexplained to this day.
Based on the idea of “bridges between the past and the future” and using the symbolism of a coin, we created our logo, where each side carries its own meaning. On one side, we represent Mikael Aramyants who, by opening windows, transports us to the past—where the pivotal events that took place must serve to strengthen the future. On the other side, we depicted the entrance to Aramyants’ castle, which, by opening its doors, signals the beginning of building the future. This is all completed by the Arevakhach (Sun Cross), also known as the Armenian Symbol of Eternity. It symbolizes life, the sun, and well-wishes, crowning this story by representing the eternal cycle of Armenian history, life, and development.
A very symbolic moment for our group was meeting Seda Galstyan, the Head of the Modern and Contemporary History Department at the History Museum of Armenia. We had a profound conversation during which she introduced us to Mikael Aramyants’ personal album, making our day truly unique. It was an exceptional opportunity for our team.
With the support of Abovyan Basic School No. 2, we organized an open lesson about Mikael Aramyants. During the lesson, we showed the children how important it is to value cultural and historical heritage that is often overlooked and gradually forgotten. To make Aramyants more relatable and to develop the children’s creative thinking, we organized an educational competition. Through group work, the children designed plans for the development and revaluation of the castle, presenting it with a fresh vision. At the end, they received gifts and certificates from us and the school.
We presented our website and booklets to tourists, students, and teachers, who listened and studied the topic with great interest. This was another occasion to speak about Mikael Aramyants and spread his ideas to people of all ages. One of our group members, Arshak, used his creative flight of mind to write a poem, which you can read on the clothes we illustrated:
“In Aramyants’ castle, Armenian greats would convene,
Serving the nation, making choices unseen.
Aramyants built and left us a legacy to hold,
A museum-diary of Lori’s nature, brave and bold.”
Mikael Aramyants was a unique figure: he built hotels and hospitals and became one of the oil giants of Baku. He paid the salaries of the hospital medical staff out of his own pocket, and treatment in that hospital was entirely free. It was in one of his hotels in Tbilisi that the Act of the Declaration of Independence of the First Republic of Armenia was signed on May 30, 1918.His castle in Akhtala served as a sanatorium and a meeting place for Armenian greats; it also housed the first women’s tennis court in Armenia.
Through these creative works, we decided to present Mikael Aramyants, and we are confident that thanks to us, many were able to discover yet another historical figure. Such works must be continuous, as the establishment and development of the state depend on each of us. We will continue to spread the stories of the legacy left by Aramyants through new and creative projects, for he and many patriots like him have been the firm builders and pillars of our history.
Thank you.
