Overview

Theme for 2026:

Every year in the second weekend of September, thousands of beautiful monuments throughout the Netherlands are accessible to everyone for free. Open Monument Day 2026 will take place on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 September. The theme is 'Resilient heritage. In times of uncertainty', which provides room for countless possibilities for creative programming. A promising prospect for people who plan to go out during Open Monument Day this year. The host municipality for the national opening – on the Friday preceding the weekend – will be in Lelystad and the province of Flevoland.

Additional information
Each year around 90 percent of Dutch municipalities participate in the Open Monumentendag, organised by local committees. In recent years around 1.8 million unique visitors have participated annually, making the Open Monumentendag one of the Netherlands’ premier cultural events. Open Monumentendag has established itself as an integral part of the Dutch cultural calendar and has helped significantly in rallying support for the preservation of historical monuments in the Netherlands.

The Dutch Open Monumentendag is organised by the Nederland Monumentenland foundation, together with governmental institutions, NGOs, associations, voluntary organisations, individual owners of monuments on a national level and many, many volunteers in nearly 90% of all Dutch municipalities.
