A PICTURESQUE JOURNEY. HOMAGE TO J. E. DELMAS ON THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF HIS BIRTH.
Juan Eustaquio Delmas, whose bicentennial is celebrated precisely this year, he was a leading figure in 19th century Bizkaia. He was writer, researcher, publicist, journalist and official printer of the Manor. In 1846 Delmas gave us The Picturesque Journey through the Provinces of Basque Country and, a few years later, his masterpiece, the Historical-Descriptive Guide for the Traveller in the Lordship of Biscay (1864), accompanied by both of lithographs of the main monuments and antiques of our territory.
Founder of the Irurak Bat newspaper and vice-president of the Commission of Monuments of Biscay, Delmas was almost a century ahead of its contemporary by adopting the descriptive approach of modern guidebooks tourism. His works show this innovative approach, with a language didactic that brings the most outstanding monuments closer to society of Bizkaia.
Miguel Zugaza, in the talk to be held at the Palacio de los Salazar, will talk to us about the many facets in which Delmas stood out, of its contribution to the promotion of the historical and cultural heritage cultural activities in Bizkaia. Next, Juan González Cembellín will guide us through the Castle of
Muñatones having as a starting point the engraving that gives this Delmas himself created the monument to illustrate his work The Journey picturesque. We will question what was in fact in this picture nineteenth century and what we have left of it today.
