18 September 2021 (10am-4pm) 19 September 2021 (10am-4pm) Stirling Polmaise
Castle was built by the Architect William Burn in 1863 and demolished 14th
July 1966. Although not a designated historic garden and designed landscape,
the castle’s gardens were laid out and retain any remnants of it’s past. In
2019 Cambusbarron Community Development Trust purchased 64 hectares of
Polmaise Wood, on the north-east side of Gillies Hill. This will allow the
community to have an active role in protecting, managing, and developing the
Hill. During Doors Open Days 2021 we will be offering guided tours of areas
that are now managed by the community, including the ruins of Polmaise Castle,
the walled garden, and the Dark Wids. Come along and hear from our volunteers
about the history of the area and the work they are doing in the woods. We
will also provide maps so that you can explore a wider area of the woodland by
yourself at the end of the tour, if you wish. Booking is essential. Tickets
are free but must be booked in advance, book here. We expect tours to last
around 90 minutes, including walking between sites. We will be following clear
paths but these may be rough underfoot, with tree roots and mud. You will need
to be able to walk about 1.5 miles, with breaks. Dogs welcome on lead. Please
meet at the Gillies Hill entrance to the woods, which is about half way up
Gillies Hill, FK7 9PG. Hot drinks and home baking available. Parking is at
