Our popular 𝘚𝘪𝘱, 𝘚𝘢𝘷𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘚𝘰𝘢𝘬 𝘪𝘯 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 series returns for the third time this coming Friday 6th October at Salina Nature Reserve. We will start at 7pm, finishing at around 9pm. The theme chosen for this edition is conservation.

In this next get-together, as usual we will have two presentations that will be followed by some time for the participants to socialize on the Salina terrace over drinks.

Those attending will first be entertained to a presentation by Debra Jane Camilleri, Executive Officer within the Superintendence of Cultural Heritage, who will focus on the need for safeguarding our cultural heritage with a presentation entitled 𝘚𝘢𝘧𝘦𝘨𝘶𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘊𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘏𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘢𝘨𝘦. Following this we will screen a short film documentary titled 𝘉𝘪𝘳𝘥𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘉𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴, prepared by Mark Trapani, on one of main conservation issues in the Maltese Islands – spring hunting of birds.

The Salina Nature Reserve is located within historic Salt Pans which were constructed by the Knights of St John in the 16th century. The complex is home to three timber huts which were reconstructed on the same style of the original ones built by the British in the 18th century for salt production, one of which serves as the visitors’ centre. It also includes the Ximenes Redoubt which was originally developed in 1715/16 during the reign of Grand Master Perellos as part of the Knights’ strategy of defending the Maltese Islands against invasion with a network of coastal fortifications. During the course of the 18th century, the redoubt was partially converted into a salt magazine. Grand Master Ximenes added a second warehouse to the complex to increase its storage capacity.
