For us, heritage is the values that our ancestors passed on to us. It's a generational connection. And of course, what could be more valuable than the time when the whole family gets together?!

Do you also meet your family at Christmas?

But the Ukrainian Christmas Eve is special. It is filled with mysticism and pre-Christian beliefs. Ukrainians believe in the presence of the souls of deceased ancestors at dinner, that garlic drives away evil spirits, that it is possible to increase wealth and economy by performing some rituals, etc.

Even the dishes on the table are symbolic. Kutya is the most important dish with which the meal begins, symbolizing unity with God and the world of the dead. Therefore, it is left overnight for the souls of those who have died. Dumplings are a symbol of abundance. Fish is a common symbol of Christ. Must be uzvar (compote of dried fruits) - a filled bowl of life.

The symbol of Christmas is Didukh that represents the genus.  This is a wheat sheaf, which has three tiers. On the lower tier there are souls of dead ancestors, the middle tier is intended for us, and on the upper tier there will be souls of unborn representatives of the genus. Didukh stands at the most honorable place in the house: at pokutia, where icons are placed. After the winter holidays, didukh is burned to let go of all souls to protect and multiply the genus.

This is how the ancient beliefs of Ukrainians and modernity combined.

Do you know what is most interesting? That most of the rituals that we showed in the video exist in Ukrainian families, regardless of whether they live (in the city or in the village), have a household or not. Why is that? Because that's what our ancestors taught us.

Для нас спадщина - це цінності, які передали нам наші предки. Це зв’язок поколінь. І звичайно, ж що може бути ціннішим, ніж час, коли вся родина збирається разом?!

Правда, ви теж зустрічаєтесь родиною на Різдво?

Але український Святвечір особливий. Він наповнений містикою та дохристиянськими віруваннями.  Українці вірять у присутність душ померлих предків на вечері, що часник відганяє нечисть, що можна примножити достаток і господарство, виконавши деякі ритуали тощо.

Навіть страви на столі є символічними. Кутя - найголовніша страва, з якої починають трапезу, симво­лізує єднання з Богом і світом померлих. Тому її залишають на ніч для душ тих, хто помер. Вареники - символ достатку. Риба є загальноприй­нятим символом Христа. Обов’язково має бути узвар (компот із сухофруктів) – наповнена чаша життя.

Символом Різдва є Дідух, який уособлює рід. Це пшеничний сніп, який має три яруси. На нижньому ярусі живуть душі мертвих предків, середній ярус призначений для   нас, а на верхньому ярусі будуть душі ще не народжених представників роду. Дідух стоїть на найпочеснішому місці в хаті: на покуті, де розміщуються ікони. Після зимових свят дідуха спалюють, щоб відпустити всі душі оберігати і примножувати рід.

Ось так і поєдналися давні вірування українців і сучасність.

А знаєте, що найцікавіше? Що більшість обрядів, які ми показали у відео, побутують в українських родинах незалежно від того, проживають у місті чи в селі, мають домашнє господарство чи ні.   Чому так? Бо так нас навчили наші предки.
