This year's excavation is the third phase of the community archaeology excavation of St Anne's house, which was preceded by a phase of archaeological testing in 2021. in 2023 the south-facing Statue Room was uncovered along with a significant portion of the adjoining drawing room and the corner of the picture gallery. In this 2024 phase we intend to expose remainder of the picture gallery and main entrance of the house that faced west down the long straight avenue. These once sumptuous rooms were designed by James Franklin Fuller for Lord and Lady Ardilaun in 1873, in what was the second major redesign and expansion of the house that was purchased by Lord Ardilaun's father Sir Bengamin Lee Guinness with his brother Arthur Lee Guinness in 1835. The house was then known as Thornhill.

If you are interested in volunteering on the excavation we would love to hear from you. You can contact us on stannesarchaeology@gmail.com.
