Aperçu

The 18th Regiment of Foot Royal Irish Regiment (& South Irish Horse) Association will host a lecture series during Heritage Week to mark the 110th anniversary of the start of World War One. The Association has invited Larry Scallan (Retd. Comdt. 3rd Btn. Stephens Barracks, Kilkenny) to present a lecture on a publication that he is working towards being published in the Autumn of 2024. This is a unique effort to determine for the first time the identity of all of the 1927 Officers NCOs and men of the 2nd Battalion, Royal Irish Regiment who qualified for the 1914 Star (the Mons Star) which is a British First World War campaign medal for service in France or Belgium between 5 August and 22 November 1914.
Victoria Barracks, Clonmel (1805- 1922) (Kickham Barracks 1922 - 2012) was the depot of the Regiment (1881 -1922) and the bases from where over 800 men left from Clonmel to head towards Devonport and on to Southampton, England to met up with over 300 more soldiers before heading to France in August 1914.
This lecture will give an insight into those who have been identified as having served with the 2nd Battalion as the scope of the research was to determine the County of origin, age, date of death, next of kin, of all the soldier’s using information that has only become available when records have been digitised in recent years.
All are welcome to attend the Main Guard, Clonmel at 7pm on Friday 23rd August 2024.
Any queries relating to this lecture can be referred to 18thregoffoot.r.i.reg@gmail.com or through the Association Facebook page
