Jerome Lordan's talk, "The Kinsale Mackerel Fishery 1860-1880," will delve into the history of Kinsale's mackerel fishing industry during the late 19th century. The presentation will explore the economic and cultural impact of this bustling fishery, highlighting the lives of the local fishing community and the evolution of fishing techniques during this pivotal period. Jerome Lordan, a native of the Old Head, was educated at Peter’s College, Wexford, Rochestown College, Cork and Hamilton High School, Bandon. He later attended the National Fisheries Training Centre in Greencastle, Co. Donegal. He then went on to spend 28 years in the fishing industry in Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. After his fishing career he studied Tourism and Heritage Management at Coláiste Stiofán Naofa and went on to attend UCC as a mature student. He completed a B.A. in Archaeology and later an M.A. in Local History. His unpublished thesis focuses on the minor place names of the Courcey Coastline. He published No Flowers on a Sailor’s Grave in 2014 and Peninsula People is his second publication. He currently runs Kinsale Harbour Cruises. He is a trustee of Lusitania Museum/Old Head Signal Tower Heritage CLG. He is also an active member of Kilbrittain Historical Society and Dúchas Clonakilty.
