Aperçu

Derrymore House is an eighteenth century manor house built by Isaac Corry on one hundred acres of demense. In 1952 Mr. J.S.W. Richardson donated Derrymore House and estate to the National Trust. Isaac Corry was the Member of Parliament for Newry and Chancellor of Exchequer in Grattan's Parliament in the Irish House of Commons. Isaac Corry had initially supported the call for greater economic control but changed allegiance to support the Act of Union. Oral tradition in South Armagh tells that the Draft Acts of Union of July and August were drafted and signed in Derrymore House. The Act of Union came into force on 1st January 1801 closing the Irish Parliament and sending 100 Members of Parliament to Westminister. Derrymore House is the connection of local history to an important national change of governance which still has relevance in the modern political life of 2024.
