The Sixmilebridge Bridge Historical Society, Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare are hosting a lecture on Friday 23rd August 2024 for National Heritage Week. This lecture will be on "The Industrial History of Sixmilebridge".

Sixmilebridge has a long history as a market town with the Earl of Thomand acquiring a market patent for the village as far back as 1618 on the western side of the river and followed by Henry Ievers in 1678 when he acquired a market patent on the eastern side of the river. Not alone was the area a bustling market town it was also famous for it's Mills. Due to Sixmilebridge's strategic position along with it's mills and markets, the village attracted many settlers from England, France and Holland. The arrival of these settlers had a strong influence on the village and increased the population significantly. T

his lecture will be an interesting and informative delve into times past and will impart the influences that the industrial past has on the village that we see today. The use of historical maps, historical accounts and historical research will be used giving all present an insight into the industrial significance of Sixmilebridge, Co. Clare.
