Aperçu

The historic centre of Sommières has many buildings that attest to its rich and tumultuous history. It dates back to 2000 years by the construction of the Roman bridge, transformed into an inhabited bridge in the Middle Ages. From the eleventh century, the lords Bermond of Anduze and Sauve settled there and built the seigneurial keep late twelfth century. The castle dominates the river Vidourle and the plain. Louis IX made it in the thirteenth century a royal stronghold, place of seats between Catholics and Protestants in the following centuries. However, as early as the 12th century the city experienced prosperity thanks to markets and fairs, crafts, trade and textile industry. Convents punctuate religious life. Today, the streets and squares preserve the testimony of these activities through a diverse heritage: ancient bridge, castle, mansions, shops and medieval houses, textile factory, church, convents.
