Aperçu

A little bit of history... At the entrance to the gorges of the Hérault, instead known as "black chasm", the old Romanesque bridge, clinging to the steep banks, spans the river at its tightest point. It is 50 m long and includes two main semicircular arches and two secondary openings, the gills, to facilitate the flow of water during the flood. It was built between 1028 and 1031, by the two nearby abbeys of Aniane and Gellone, who jealously controlled both banks of the river. Considered one of the oldest medieval bridges in France, it has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO under the Pilgrim’s Route to Santiago de Compostela in France since 1998. Today, it is an ideal place to meet up with family or friends, and during the sunny days, you can swim at the supervised beach of the Pont du Diable or browse the gorges of the Hérault by canoe.
