Aperçu

The castle of Izaut-de-l'Hôtel is located in the heart of the Central Pyrenees, in the department of Haute-Garonne, in Comminges. It is probable that the lords of Izaut erected their castle in the 12th century. Later, the Counts of Comminges elevated the site to the rank of chief town of châtellenie, making it a powerful center of power. In 2011, extensive brushing awakened the castle from its sleep. Since then, annual excavations have been conducted to better understand the history of the site. The work of consolidation of the remains is currently continuing on the seigneurial part of the castle. The castral site, with an area of about 4,800 m2, is divided into two large distinct areas: the seigneurial part, which includes a preserved tower on two levels dominating the fortified area, and the lower, much larger enclosure, which includes a first village area. Beyond the ramparts, the medieval village then extends gently on the hillside.
