Discover the secrets of a remarkable church, with a guide
The history of Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune is marked by many stages. Originally founded extramuros in the 7th-8th centuries, this Romanesque church is adorned with the Gothic style in the 13th century. The building then underwent a number of alterations, due to its transformation into a Protestant church following the reform and the capture of Strasbourg by Louis XIV. The «simultaneum» (the use of the church for both cults, Catholic and Protestant) is then in force and will continue until the end of the 19th century. The restoration of Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune is entrusted to Carl Schäfer, whose intervention marks the history of the building. He painted the exterior of the church inspired by traces of exterior polychromy. But this polychromy disappears in the 1960s, during which the church is repainted in a color that is reminiscent of the pink sandstone of the Vosges.
