«Building/deconstructing the coast: the case of the former Helio-Marine Institute of Labenne»: visi…
In the ruins of the brownfield that now occupies the beach of Labenne, still remains the memory of a health facility created in 1929, at the origin of a sylvio-marine station for the reception of the sick. Located specifically 100 meters from the sea, on the edge of the Landes forest, the Helio-Marin Institute benefits from this favorable environment for cures. Barely a hundred years later, these same conditions, at the time of climate change, lead to its programmed disappearance. The proposed tours and conference will present the history of this monument, from its construction in the 1930s to its next demolition. The Sainte-Thérèse chapel was built in 1932 to allow Catholic patients in the institute to practice their worship. Bought in 2015 by the Conservatoire du Littoral, it has been restored. Now caught in the sands, it has become, like the Institute or the surrounding bunkers, a benchmark to measure the progress of the dune and the retreat of the coastline.
