Aperçu

Located in the extreme south of the department of Vienna, Availles-Limouzine is the first town that one crosses coming from Charente towards Poitiers, distant of 65 km. Of an ancient foundation, the castle of Availles was in the Middle Ages one of the most important fiefdoms of the barony of Saint-Germain de Confolens, which was part of the Basse-Marche. Despite its opposition, when the departments were created, it was attached to that of Vienna, of which it became the smallest canton capital. This vast town covers 5,790 hectares on both sides of Vienna. Land of transition between Poitou and Limousin, it offers a diverse landscape of plateaux culminating at 209 m altitude, as well as small valleys with wooded hillsides. Four ecologically significant areas (ZNIEFF 1) are home to a large number of protected species. The village is located on the gentle slopes of the left bank of the Vienne and still retains traces of ancient medieval fortifications in its heart.
