Aperçu

Saint-Pierre Cathedral is located in the heart of the old town, on the left bank of the Charente. The foundation of this episcopal see is traditionally attributed to Saint Eutrope. Consecrated in 1185, the church was to be in very bad condition at the end of the hundred-year war because the bishops of the Rochechouart family then undertook the reconstruction of a vast Gothic building, begun by the powerful bell tower-porch that will never be finished because of the destruction associated with the wars of religion. The large embracing portal built at the base of the tower is remarkably decorated with historiated arches: musicians angels, doctors of the church, bishops of Saints, saints and prophets.
