As early as 1916, a hydroelectric project required the digging of an underground gallery to partially divert the Valserine and benefit from a sufficient fall above the turbines. But this work did not succeed, despite nearly a kilometer dug in the rock. Since 1947, EDF has inherited the plots and still owns the land. In 1969, speleologists from Bellegarde-sur-Valserine reported the presence of bats in the abandoned gallery. From 1972, Jean-Louis Rolandez (1954-2004), speleologist and naturalist, undertook to count several times a year the numbers present especially in winter. Active member of CORA Ain, he then undertook in 1995 the constitution of files with the owner EDF to classify the site in Voluntary Nature Reserve. The classification is effective on December 8, 1997 by Prefectural Decree and the regional federation "CORA Region" became manager of the RNV, under agreement with EDF.
