Aperçu

Saint-Gervais Church was built in the fourth quarter of the 12th century. It would house the relics of Saint-Anthème Chapelain de Charles-Martel mort au combat. The body of the saint martyr was reportedly transported to Jonzac by Charlemagne and buried in the shrine dedicated to the Saint-Gervais and Protais. As it stands today the building is composed of a Romanesque facade classified with three registers, embellished with columns and colonnettes surmounted at the pinnacle by curious small heads, low-sides of the 16th century, of a bell tower of the 19th century. Inside there are beautiful stained glass windows, an organ (listed as a historical monument), an altarpiece and religious furniture from the 19th century. The scenography of the forecourt suggests and explains the important Merovingian necropolis, object of archaeological excavations in 2009\\. The illumination of the place at nightfall enchants the visitor. Saint-Gervais Church CDCHS V.Sabadel
