Discover the history of a Serbian Orthodox Church
The Serbian Orthodox Church, whose autocephaly was obtained by Saint Sava in 1219, making him the first archbishop, had a tumultuous history. In 1346, Emperor Dušan elevated it to the rank of Patriarchate. However, with the collapse of the Serbian state in 1459, the Patriarchate ceased to exist, and the church passed under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople. In 1557, the Serbian Patriarchate was re-established, exercising its authority for 219 years until its abolition in 1776 by the Ottomans. Despite this, provincial churches have emerged in Serbian territories, with the hope of bringing them together when circumstances permit.
