The big weekend at Sanzay Castle
The history of Sanzay Castle is linked to that of the family of the Counts of Sanzay, which began in 1050 with Aimery. The castle of Sanzay is a feudal fortress built in the course of the thirteenth century (enclosure flanked by towers, entrance castle and lodging), but on two occasions it undergoes enemy assaults and is therefore transformed. From the 13th century, it remains the castle built in granite, the local stone. It is marked by 2 round crenellated towers. At the top, there is a round path supported by stone consoles with machicolations. The towers are pierced with arches. A drawbridge with arrows protected the entrance of the castle. It was replaced by a fixed bridge that allows to cross the moat still in water that completed the defense. The manor house develops on 3 levels and it had to communicate with buildings destroyed today. Next to it is the chapel, identifiable by a large bay with a Gothic decoration.
