The little secrets of a rural church
The chapel was dedicated to Sainte Madeleine in the 16th century. It then depended on the Abbey of Marmoutier, near Tours, famous and powerful because of the importance of its possessions. The church was very bare during the Revolution. Today, mass is celebrated once a year around Saint Madeleine (22 July). In 1982, the church underwent major restoration work that proved crucial. The interior of this building, consisting of a simple panelled nave and choir, is rectangular in plan covered with a plaster panelling. On entering, we discover two low arch of the seventeenth century. In the choir, are located curious stalls, whose rising seats close with a lock and reveal a bar with large nails! According to local history, this process would have been intended to prevent the residents of a former nearby leprosarium from sitting on the stalls and thus limit the contagion.
