Vlasin Lake the pearl of southeastern Serbia
My name is Mihajlo Stojanović, I am 9 years old. I live in Vlasotinac.
This is the Vlasina River, which originates from the Vlasina Lake, the largest reservoir in Serbia.
The jewel or pearl of southeastern Serbia, as this lake is also called, is located at an altitude of 1,200 meters, is 12 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide. The depth varies from 5 to 35 meters.
The crystal clear water in the lake is of the first category quality.
In 2006, Vlasin Lake was declared an area of exceptional quality, because it is home to many endemic and protected species of fish, birds and plants.
There are extensive forests and meadows around the lake, especially the areas with white birch and conifers, as you can see.
There are about 70 sources of drinking and clean water on Lake Vlasin, and one of the most attractive is this one here, which is called Izvor Sveti Nikola.
However, what Vlasina Lake is best known for are the floating, peat islands, a unique natural phenomenon that float over the entire surface of the lake.
The islands were created as a product of moss and wet habitats of various plants and animal species, and they floated on the surface of the water after the former Vlasin marshes were submerged.
This behind us is the largest floating island called Moby Dick.
As an area of exceptional natural beauty, the Vlasis Lake deserves a place in the world heritage by all its merits.
