The citadel erected by the Spanish who occupied Port-Louis during the wars of religion, was altered and enlarged under Louis XIII from 1616 to 1622\\. This imposing building houses several types of collections centered around the local maritime history and the past of the stronghold. It gained its fame in the seventeenth century with the development of the port and stores of L'Orient (Lorient) before being forgotten.
