The site Dominating the middle valley of the Cèze, the castrum of Allègre emerges from the garrigue. There are towers and stately houses, a double rampart, a chapel and a village. Despite its present state in ruins, the houses have various remarkable elements to observe: doors and windows in semicircular, cupboards, niches, stairs, loopholes, day in arches, holes of hourd, and superimposed latrines intramural. Located at an altitude of 275 metres, the site covers a hectare and a half. It offers a sublime panorama of the Mont Bouquet and all the Cévenne, from Pic Saint-Loup, near the Mediterranean, to Vivarais, to the borders of the Ardèche, passing by Aigoual and Mont Lozère. Ten centuries of history The origin of the site remains unknown. A tribute paid in 1163 by the lords of Ferreyroles to Bernard Pelet, lord of Alès, is the first known act attesting to the occupation of the place. In 1209, the count of Toulouse admits to hold the castrum in fief of the bishop of Uzès, King Philip A
